For my birthday one of my grown girls gave
me a puzzle. It was 1000 pieces. I opened it
at Christmas time. We always have a puzzle
we are working, and visitors pitch in. The house
was full up with people. Many of the people
were short people. They were in fact children.
No matter, somehow a puzzle piece was lost.
We moved the table, lifted up the cardboard
the puzzle was on. I looked through the
pockets of my robe and several pairs of pants.
I used a flashlight to look under furniture. There
has only been one other time I have come to the
end of a 1000 piece puzzle and a piece was missing.
We found it 15 years later, when we moved a giant
desk. The thing that was so disturbing, was that I knew
it wasn’t the short people’s doing. It was me. I remember
seeing a stray puzzle piece and putting it “somewhere”, so
I wouldn’t lose it. But I did, and that is puzzling.
