They almost look like little boats sitting in dock.
Instead they are fruit cakes of various sizes and shapes.
Fruit cake is questionable to most. But I have been
making my husband’s Aunt Liz’s, who is now passed on,
recipe for years. She was straight from Germany.
“We watched the bombing of Berlin from our back yard.”
She had incredible stories and a down to earth way about
her that allowed me to relate to her. I enjoyed her as much,
if not more, than any of my own Aunts. She cut her own hair,
boiled coffee on the stove top, wore jeans and white shirts every
day. She housed scads of them in her closet, along with three dollar
Ked knock offs. She was as thrifty as any one I’ve ever met. When I
asked for her recipe, she handed me a paper, pencil, and ruler.
Never looked in a cookbook. She knew it by heart. She
said, divide the paper into three sections, and then she listed the
ingredients off for each section, made a few hand motions to signify mixing.
Buy the ingredients from Aldis-cheaper and just as good. Is what she said.
Best fruitcake ever!
Thanks!!
