So, at book club a few evenings ago while
we were discussing the book. Title isn’t even
necessary here. We spent the first part chatting about fluff.
Fluff, being descriptive language for scenes and people.
“I skim over all that -just get to the point!”
That is what was said in a room full of readers.
Busy readers, young moms, grandmothers, and
full time working ladies. Emphasis is on two words.
Fluff and skim. Writers spend hours sculpting descriptive
sentences. Show don’t tell. All senses – taste, smell, touch,
sight, hearing. Lovely sentences so the reader can feel the room,
or smell the garlic, or hear the yelling… Fluff?
Readers are rushed, preoccupied, bored, or in the
case of an audio book, driving or sleeping through
chapters of Fluff?
