Today was hot! Unusually hot. It’s been a bit of a hot week.
Mr. Fix-it got an early start to his outdoor work to avoid the
heat and still get a bike ride in. Thirst picks up for me quite
a bit in the summer, so I decided to make some sun tea.
There were two Meyer lemons left in the fridge. I was looking
forward to the first sun tea of the season. After pouring my glass
of tea adding ice and squeezing the lemon in, I was pleased with
myself. Mr. Fix-it was already bike riding. So, I had some time alone.
Somehow I bumped my glass of tea over! Not a drop spilled onto the floor.
The whole glass filled up my special box where I keep odds and ends of paper scraps,
envelopes, tissue paper… I don’t need to tell you what a mess that made.
In the end I was able to salvage it all except a tiny white paper bag.
The red tissue bled into the white. After fan drying it for the rest of the day
I cheered myself with the memory of Eric Carle, the German-American author,
designer and illustrator of children’s books. The Very Hungry Caterpillar…
I remembered reading a book about him, and how he painted his own tissue.
Of course, mine wasn’t hand painted, instead it was tea-ed, bled, blotted, and fan dried.
Quite a feat in the end!
