The ripe is on. Somehow, I had managed
to miss six cucumbers-they grew to the size of a
large zucchini, and turned a soft yellow.
We were able to salvage three of them.
The acorn squash, being honey dew melon,
has mitigated some of my satisfaction in this
tiny garden. Even so, the tomatoes are ripening up.
My habanero and chili peppers are thriving.
This garden reminds me a lot of my father’s garden.
He grew cucumbers, radishes, beets, rutabagas,
tomatoes, rhubarb, and bulb onions. Our mother,
who hardly ever ate a sandwich, buttered up two
slices of wonder bread and toasted them in a skillet.
She lathered the bread with a good amount of miracle
whip and season salt. Sliced up tomatoes and cucumbers,
and put together her garden sandwich.
I still remember her licking her lips, in anticipation, while
she prepared the sandwich. Nothing like fresh garden produce.
